How to verify an immigration legal representative

Choosing someone to explain immigration options involves more than comparing a website or an advertised price. Verify the person’s identity, authorization and proposed role before sharing a full file or agreeing to representation.

Start with the person, not only the business name

Ask for the name of the individual who would provide advice and the professional capacity in which they would act. A trade name, attractive website or administrative office does not by itself establish authorization to practice law. Write down the details so that you can check them independently. Be cautious if the person who advertises the service cannot explain who will actually take responsibility for your matter.

Use official verification resources

The Department of Justice’s legal-representation page brings together its Recognition and Accreditation Program, pro bono provider list and information about practitioners who are currently ineligible to practice immigration law. Follow the relevant resource and read its scope. For an attorney, use the appropriate licensing authority’s public record as well. Check the current entry rather than relying only on a copied certificate or an undated screenshot.

Check the limits of the authorization

Different types of authorization can have different limits. Ask whether the person can act in the particular forum involved in your case. An administrative helper, interpreter or document preparer is not automatically authorized to provide legal advice. If the explanation is unclear, verify it with the relevant official source before assuming that the same person can handle every stage of a matter.

Compare the proposal with the work you need

A consultation, document review, application preparation and court appearance are different services. Ask which ones are included in the proposed agreement. A low initial price may cover only an appointment, while a larger quoted amount may include additional work. The useful comparison is the written scope and responsibilities, not the price alone. Ask how additional work would be approved and documented.

Keep control of your information

Keep copies of agreements, receipts, notices and documents submitted on your behalf. Understand how communications will reach you and how to obtain your complete file. Do not sign blank forms or approve information that you know is inaccurate. If someone asks for access to an account, establish why that access is needed and how it will be managed. Share sensitive records only through an appropriate channel.

Treat outcome promises carefully

No private representative decides whether the government grants a benefit. Ask for an explanation of the procedure and relevant uncertainties rather than a guarantee. A review or testimonial may describe one person’s experience but cannot establish authorization, suitability for your facts or a future result. If you are being pressured to act immediately, separate any real legal deadline from a sales deadline.

Record what you checked

Keep a dated note of the official records you consulted and the questions answered. Recheck if the person handling the matter changes. This guide does not recommend a particular practitioner or establish anyone’s current professional status. Where an urgent notice or hearing is involved, seek qualified help promptly while verifying the proposed representative’s identity and authority.
